Events & Updates
Czech School of California organizes social events and outdoor activities for its students throughout the academic year to encourage social interaction and community gathering. Our events are open to all families with children, students that have since left our school and new potential interested families from within the Czech community in the area.
Below is a list of our regular events that take place every year. Other events are organized too, for example treasure hunts, hikes, beach cleaning environmental days, musical instrument performances by students etc. We have had visiting speakers, theater groups and puppet shows coming from the Czech Republic to perform for our students and the wider community. These events are announced and promoted as and when they come up. Follow our Facebook pages to keep up to date on what’s coming up.
Our regular events include:
Open House
Open House takes place annually on the first day of school in September and provides families with the opportunity to reconnect after summer break, students can visit their classrooms and meet their teachers, browse learning materials and purchase a limited stock of class books.
Race Day Beh Republiky
Every October, Czech School of California and Sokol SF jointly organize a celebration of the Day of the Republic and Beh Republiky races in San Mateo. This active, fun and sociable morning is perfect for the whole family with adult and children’s races followed by a picnic.
St Nicholas Day
Our younger students are visited by St Nicholas and his helpers at school on a Saturday closest to St Nicholas Day. This event is organized by our older students and loved by parents. As is tradition, St Nicholas asks every child if they were good throughout the year, asks for a song or rhyme and rewards them with candy or a small gift.
Christmas Celebration
The most popular event of the year, the Christmas Besidka takes place on the last day of school before the winter break. We spend the afternoon celebrating Czech Christmas by coming together, singing carols and feasting on traditional Christmas meals. Key events are student performances and the ever popular tombola prize draw.
Easter Celebration
Our school Easter gathering takes place annually in a park in April and includes art and craft activities for all ages. Our teachers share their skills in egg decorating with traditional techniques, we braid pomlazka, have an egg hunt and enjoy some traditional Easter cakes shared by parents.
Children’s Day
Another popular event organized in association with Sokol SF, this picnic celebrating Children’s Day takes place in June. Families gather at Lake Chabot to socialize, have a picnic on preheated grills and children take part in fun, competitive races such as potato sack races, ring toss, egg and spoon races and more.
